What About Communion?

The identity statement of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) expresses:
“We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we invite everyone to the Lord’s Table, just as God has welcomed us.”

Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is a central focus of our weekly worship and is open to all who follow Jesus Christ. This practice has become fundamental to the Disciples tradition. Our observance of the Lord’s Supper reflects the Passover meal, where Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples before his crucifixion. Through the Holy Spirit, we encounter the living Christ in the sharing of the bread and cup, symbolizing his body and blood. This sacred moment affirms Christ’s presence among us and proclaims him as the guiding force in our lives.

What About Baptism?

Baptism symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, representing both the death and burial of the old self of the repentant believer and the joyful emergence of a new life in Christ. The founders of the Disciples movement taught that immersion is the accepted form of baptism.

According to the “Word to the Church on Baptism” from the Commission on Theology (1987), baptism is a public declaration through which the church proclaims God’s grace, as revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It serves as a visible sign of God’s initiative and the individual’s response in faith. Alongside other Christians, we affirm that baptism is both a divine gift and a human response.

The significance of baptism is rooted in God’s redemptive work through Christ. It incorporates the believer into the community of the body of Christ and looks forward to a future where the powers of the old world will be overcome, and God’s purposes will prevail.

Where Did the Chalice Come From?

The chalice holds significant meaning within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), symbolizing the central role of communion in our worship. It serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples, where he shared the cup, inviting all to partake in the grace and fellowship that communion represents.

In addition to the chalice, the X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew plays a vital role in our identity. This unique symbol honors Andrew’s legacy and emphasizes the ministry of each believer, reminding us that everyone is called to contribute to the life of the church.

Together, the chalice and the cross reflect our commitment to inclusivity and mission, inviting all to experience the transformative power of communion while encouraging each person to engage actively in the life of the faith community
